A federal judge has declined to sentence in absentia the former deputy Ohio treasurer who pleaded guilty last year to federal bribery and money laundering charges in an alleged kickback scheme in the office. Prosecutors say 39-year-old Amer Ahmad fled to Pakistan to avoid prison time. Prosecutors say Ahmad accepted more than 500 thousand dollars in bribes in exchange for awarding business to brokerage services. Ahmad worked for two Ohio treasurers and later as Chicago comptroller.
