Toledo Mayor Passes Away

City of Toledo

Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins died at a hospital on Friday from a heart attack he sustained while driving during a snowstorm.  The Toledo Blade reports Collins died after being taken off of life support. A political independent, the 70-year-old former police officer and former City Council member was in his first term as mayor of Ohio's fourth-largest city. Toledo city officials say Collins was found unconscious after crashing his SUV into a utility pole on Sunday. Toledo City Council President Paula Hicks-Hudson was sworn in as acting mayor later in the day on Sunday. Collins is the first Toledo mayor to die in office since 1904 when Samuel “Golden Rule” Jones died after a brief illness. Funeral arrangements for Collins are being handled by Coyle Funeral Home in South Toledo.
