A group seeking to legalize marijuana in Ohio this year has estimated how much revenue their plan could generate. Ohio Public Radio's Karen Kasler reports.
The group ResponsibleOhio says the legal marijuana industry would generate $554 million – more than half a billion dollars – in new annual tax revenue for Ohio. But the group cautions it would take till 2020 for the market to stabilize. The group’s amendment would create 10 growing sites for marijuana, and would also allow Ohioans to apply for licenses to grow smaller amounts of pot in their homes ResponsibleOhio says most of the tax money would be split among local and county governments, with some money going toward addiction prevention, enforcement of regulations and other programs. ResponsibleOhio hasn’t yet started gathering signatures, but says it still hopes to make the fall ballot. Another group is pushing a much less restrictive marijuana legalization amendment, but is aiming for next year’s ballot.
