White House Calls For End Of "Conversion Therapies"
The Obama administration is calling for an end to therapies aimed at changing the sexual orientation or gender identity of gay, lesbian and transgender youth. White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett says scientific evidence shows the so-called conversion therapies are neither medically nor ethically appropriate. The statement is in response to an online petition asking the White House to ban the therapies. The petition was created after the death of 17-year-old Leelah Alcorn of southwest Ohio, who wrote in a suicide note her parents forced her to attend conversion therapy.
