DuPont Settles Second C-8 Test Case

DuPont has settled the second of two test cases that had potential to influence thousands of similar lawsuits about the discharging of the chemical C8 into the Ohio River and drinking water. The case involved a 55-year-old West Virginia man who alleged water tainted by the chemical used to make teflon led to him contracting ulcerative colitis. The parties involved did not disclose details of the settlement reached months after jurors in the first case awarded 1.6 million dollars to a 60-year-old Guysville woman who said she got cancer after drinking contaminated water from DuPont's Washington Works plant near Parkersburg, West Virginia. A federal judge refused to grant a retrial. DuPont maintained C8 did not contribute to her cancer and is expected to appeal the decision.
