Investigation: State Not Tracking Death Benefit Payments

A Dayton Daily New investigation shows the state has not tracked insurance company payments of death benefits to see if benficiaries hey are getting what they are owed since a national probe revealed large insurers were holding onto billions of dollars meant for those beneficiaries. Insurers have made settlements in Ohio and other states and paid billions to beneficiaries since the national probe was started by Florida's insurance office in 2009. The newspaper's investigation shows Ohio has collected 7.1 million dollars in settlements since the national probe was launched, but has made no effort to identify how much insurers have paid directly to Ohioans. The Ohio Department of Insurance says its files indicate no notices to beneficiaries.
