Struggling Local Needle Exchange Program Gets Additional Public Funding

The City of Columbus and Franklin County are teaming up to provide funding for a struggling program providing clean syringes and other services for drug users.

A news release from the city says Safe Point, run by Equitas Health, is getting 225 thousand dollars in funding from the city and county to continue operations through the end of the year. The goal is to save lives as well as  prevent overdoses and the spread of disease through prevention and by connecting users to treatment. Franklin County has more than 43 hundred active heroin users, and the program distributed more than 1.2 million syringes last year.
