Sharonville UPS Employee Fired For Wearing Blackface

facebook.com

A UPS employee in southwest Ohio has been fired for wearing blackface as part of her Halloween costume.

The unidentified female employee who worked in Sharonville was terminated after an image was posted to Facebook showing her dressed in blackface while wearing an oversize red coat, thick red lipstick and a red bandanna in her hair, similar to the offensive “mammy” caricature that rose to prominence in minstrel shows and the Jim Crow era. UPS media relations manager Kim Krebs cited the company's strict policies against harassment and discrimination for the dismissal. Krebs says in a statement the company has "no tolerance for hatred, bigotry or prejudice." It's not clear whether the woman wore the costume to work. UPS declined to name the employee. Kansas City hospital officials said Tuesday an employee who posted photos of herself in blackface no longer works there. The woman was dressed as Beyonce in a photo on her now-removed Facebook page. Morning show host Megyn Kelly was fired from NBC last month after suggesting it was OK for white people to wear blackface at Halloween.

Jim has been with WCBE since 1996. Before that he worked as a reporter at another Columbus radio station, and for three newspapers in Southwest Florida.
