Crestline Police Chief Facing Dereliction Of Duty And Other Allegations

Village of Crestline

Officials in the Crawford County Village of Crestline say an internal investigation has found police chief Joe Butler is incompetent, dishonest, and derelict in his duty.

Mayor Allen Moore resigned earlier this year after being recorded on video using a racial slur. Butler recorded the video. The probe says he ignored orders to provide ammunition and backup weapons for police vehicles while keeping some at his home. He also prevented access to important areas of the police department. The investigation also says he misplaced personnel files and evidence, and abused body camera video. He also recorded several council members in their homes, and made secret recordings of meetings with county prosecutors. Butler has been placed on leave and is expected to comment at a public meeting next Monday, where the village council will vote on disciplinary action.
