The Ohio House and Senate have overriden Governor John Kasich's veto of a bill raising the pay for themselves and other elected officials.
The bill was originally designed to increase death benefits for the families of first responders. But attaching the pay raises created controversy. Ohio Public Radio's Andy Chow reports.
Supporters of the pay raise say it’s a modest increase in wages that even falls short of the cost of living adjustment.
Kasich objected to what he described as a last-minute rush by lawmakers to increase their own paychecks.
Senator Jay Hottinger pointed out that Kasich had to address high wages for his own cabinet members in 2011.
Hottinger: “The governor said and I quote ‘what we’re trying to do is call people to service.”
The Senate and House had plenty of bipartisan support to override the veto.
