Police ID Officer Shot In Ambush

Columbus police have identifed the officer hospitalized in stable condition after being shot in an ambush while conducting surveillance.

Police say William Frease provided a description of the vehicle in which the suspects fled. The plain-clothes officer was shot near East Hudson Street and McGuffey Road while watching three suspects as part of an investigation. Police say the suspects saw the officer, then pulled  their car behind his. One of the suspects then exited and opened fire.

Police in suburban Whitehall stopped the vehicle and took three people into custody. They have since been released while investigators try to determine who shot Frease.

Police say a firearm was found in the vehicle.
