Court Rejects Appeal Of Man Convicted Of Killing Former OSU Football Player

New Orleans Advocate

A court on Wednesday rejected an appeal by the man convicted of killing former New Orleans Saints and Ohio State football player Will Smith during a traffic altercation, rejecting claims Cardell Hayes acted in self-defense.

Hayes is serving a 25-year sentence for manslaughter in the 2016 shooting death of Smith and attempted manslaughter in the wounding of Smith's wife. A three-judge panel of the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed Hayes' conviction and 25 year sentence. His attorneys will ask the full 4th Circuit to hear the case.
