The last of the 80 Doolittle Tokyo Raiders who carried out the U.S. attack on Japan days after the Pearl Harbor attack that launched World War II died Tuesday at a military hospital in Texas.
Retired Lieutenant Colonel Richard "Dick" Cole was 103. Cole was mission commander Jimmy Doolittle's co-pilot in the attack. Cole participated in the April 2017 commemoration of the raid's 75th anniversary at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force near Dayton. A spokesperson says the Dayton native died at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. The official had no immediate additional details.
