Husel Files Defamation Suit Against Mt. Carmel, Former CEO and Parent Firm

The former Mount Carmel Health System physician charged with giving dozens of patients fatal doses of pain medication has filed a defamation lawsuit against the system, parent company Trinity Health Corporation, and former Mount Carmel President and CEO Edward Lamb.

William Husel alleges he was falsely accused by Mount Carmel and its corporate executives of intentionally murdering 25 patients. The suit claims these statements were repeated on numerous occasions in “non-stop” press releases and other public statements. The suit also claims Husel gave terminally ill patients relatively lower doses and realized the patients were still suffering in 2014 and 2015. Husel believed the large doses may have been needed but each one of those decisions is “patient specific.” Mount Carmel says the claims are unfounded.  10 former Mount Carmel employees filed a suit earlier this month defending Husel and claiming the system and Trinity Health defamed the doctor and nurses who worked with him. Husel has pleaded not guilty, and previously filed suit to  have Mount Carmel pay his legal fees.
