As Columbus Council Outlines Police Reform Proposal, Ginther Blasts FOP

nytimes.com

Columbus Mayor Andy Ginther says he is disappointed with the Columbus Fraternal Order of Police's lack of commitment to reform.

Ginther met yesterday with FOP President Keith Farrell. He says union claims that officials are willing to listen have been made for too long. Ginther called on the public to hold the FOP accountable if they ignore the will of the community.  Farrell says his members feel betrayed by the mayor's statement.

Meanwhile, Columbus City Council is releasing details of a plan to reform the police division.  Council Thursday outlined short and long-term reform efforts, including legislation on background checks, third-party investigations of the use of lethal force, and the end of no-knock raids. Public hearings will be scheduled.
