Columbus Schools Boosting Pay For Substitute Teachers

WCBE files

The Columbus Board of Education this week unanimously approved pay raises for substitute teachers, amid a widespread shortage.

Rates range from 18 dollars per hour for general susbtitutes on short term assignments, to 34 dollars per hour for substitutes with a teaching license on long-term assignments.  It's the first time the district has raised the wages of substitutes in three years, and the rates are now among the highest in central Ohio.

A native of Chicago, naturalized citizen of Cincinnati and resident of Columbus, Alison attended Earlham College and the Ohio State University. She has equal passion for Midwest history, hockey and Slavic poetry.
