Columbus Officer Faces Additional Charges For Pepper Spraying Protesters

Columbus Division of Police

A new set of charges have been filed against a Columbus police officer already facing allegations of misconduct during police brutality protests in Columbus in May 2020.

Officer Traci Shaw faces another set of Assault, Dereliction of Duty and Interference with Civil Rights charges after investigation revealed a fourth individual pepper sprayed by Shaw. Earlier court documents say video shows Shaw getting out of her marked cruiser at the corner of Goodale and High Streets May 30, 2020, walking up to three protestors and pepper-spraying them.

Shaw is one of three Columbus officers charged this summer with misdemeanors, following an independent investigation headed by former FBI agent Rick Wozniak. Officers Holly Kanode and Phillip Walls also face charges including Assault, Dereliction of Duty and Falsification for events on the same date. All three have pled not guilty.

The investigation remains open to identify previously unidentified officers, victims, and events that involve witness officers.

A native of Chicago, naturalized citizen of Cincinnati and resident of Columbus, Alison attended Earlham College and the Ohio State University. She has equal passion for Midwest history, hockey and Slavic poetry.
