Agribusiness Group Expanding Program To Combat Farm Runoff

A voluntary program that trains agricultural retailers how to reduce farm runoff that feeds harmful algae is being expanded across all of Ohio. The Ohio AgriBusiness Association says the program will be open to all farm fertilizer sellers and service providers beginning next year.  The program was launched in early 2014 following an increase in algae blooms in Lake Erie and other waterways in Ohio. It set out to train fertilizer sellers in the western Lake Erie area where the algae problems have been concentrated.  Researchers have estimated two-thirds of the phosphorus that helps the algae grow comes from farm runoff.
