The Scioto Valley Local Schools have closed Zahn's Corner Middle School in Piketon after enriched uranium was discovered inside.
There are concerns it came from a plant less than five miles away. U.S. Department of Energy officials have no plans to stop work at the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant. The school will be closed for the remainer of the year. A 2017 Energy Department report found traces of neptunium at an air monitoring station at the school. The Pike County Health Department formally called on the Engery Department to stop construction of the nuclear waste disposal facility after an independent study also found contamination elsewhere.
