In anticipation of a surge in coronavirus cases, an alternate care center has been set up at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. The one-thousand-bed facility represents part of a state plan to prepare for a possible surge in critical COVID-19 cases. Alternate care centers like the one in Columbus have been set up in five convention centers and other buildings to handle less serious cases. 

The Greater Columbus Convention Center is one of six sites identified by the state to handle COVID-19 patients in the case hospitals are overwhelmed by a surge.

The Central Ohio Hospital Council says the Columbus Convention Center will be used as a surge location in the event there is a major increase of COVID-19 patients needing treatment at local hospitals.

Columbus city officials have approved a memo of understanding with Franklin County and the County Convention Facilities Authority to collaborate on expansion of the Hilton hotel adjacent to the convention center.
