Officers are cleared of charges in a fatal shooting death in Westerville emergency room

A Franklin County grand jury has declined to indict officers involved in a fatal shooting at Mount Carmel St. Ann's Hospital in April 2021.

27-year old Miles Jackson had been transported to the hospital twice in the same day. Columbus police were notified of an outstanding arrest warrant. Hospital security and Columbus police struggled with Miles Jackson during a pat down.

According to body camera footage, Jackson was tasered, and then fired one shot at officers. After a brief standoff where Jackson remained on the floor of an examination room, police say Jackson fired two more shots, and they returned fire.

Jackson was treated at the hospital but died on site. His death, and that of a 16-year old girl less than a week later, also at the hands of police, kicked off a wave of demonstrations.

Franklin County Prosecutor Gary Tyack announced today that the grand jury Wednesday decided to not indict the Columbus officers or Mount Carmel St. Ann's security officers.
