Teenage boy shot at troubled Wedgewood Village apartment complex

A teenage boy injured in a shooting near the Wedgewood Village Apartment Thursday remains hospitalized, his conditioned upgraded to stable. Columbus police responded to reports of a shooting at a playground in the 700 block of Wedgewood Drive, and the 15-year-old victim was taken to Nationwide Children's Hospital.

Violence at the apartment complex has been on the rise in recent years, especially shootings involving young people. In October, 13-year old Sinzae Reed was shot and killed At Wedgewood October. The city attorney 's office met with property owners to discuss security improvements, days after a woman and another child were injured by bullets at the complex.

In January, the city installed new community crime cameras are several spots on the streets surrounding the complex, while the owners installed dozens of cameras within. Last month city council approved over $44,000 for a ShotSpotter gunfire detector in the area.

According to analysis by the Columbus Dispatch, shootings at Wedgewood have nearly quadrupled since 2019, and there have been eight homicides. 21 shootings were reported in 2022 alone.
