The Columbus Blue Jackets have confirmed that star Johnny Gaudreau died last night, after he and his brother were struck by a suspected drunk driver in New Jersey hometown. The brothers were in Carney's Point for their sister's wedding when they went bicycling on a county route. Police say 43-year old Sean Higgins of Woodstown attempted to pass two vehicles on the road, and hit both Gaudreau and his 29-year old brother Matt from behind. Both died from their injuries. Higgins is currently in custody, suspected of being under the influence and charged with two counts of death by auto.

The 31-year old Gaudreau came to the Blue Jackets from Calgary in 2022, signing a seven-year $68.75 million dollar contract. Nicknamed "Johnny Hockey", the Jackets said he "played the game with great joy" and an infectious enthusiasm. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman called Gaudreau "more than just a dazzling hockey player" but a doting father, husband, son, brother and teammate.

Gaudreau was a six-time All-Star and made the 2015 NHL All-Rookie team. He played 763 games in his career, with 243 goals and 500 assists.
