Whether we’re writing in first person or third, it’s vital for our characters to have distinctive voices. Even if you’re writing with an omniscient narrator, eventually there will be dialogue and when your characters talk, they should sound like individual people. We’ll use this two-hour class to discuss what makes up a voice, look at examples of strong character voices in published work, and delve into exercises designed to help you create those individual voices in your own work.

Would you like to be able to discuss chores, sleep, activities, and music or other practice without losing your patience and feeling wrung out?
Would you like to feel closer to your kids, your partner, and get more support, as well?
If so, these sessions are for you.
Learn to shift recurring conversations in a connecting way that builds trust and cooperation with your family members.
This class will:
1) introduce you to the overall mindset of NVC (including 4 Ds that get in the way of connection)
2) help you see what’s motivating you and others so you have more hope and less stress and
3) give you an introduction to a 4-part language for speaking about and negotiating what you need.
This way of communicating isn’t about giving in; it’s about showing up in a way that is both clear and kind. It’s also about shifts, the kind that happen when we get what someone needs. The goal is to create the quality of connection where giving happens willingly and lovingly.
As with any of Elke’s sessions, you will have opportunities to practice with live scenarios.
This short series is also suitable for teachers.
