Council Approves Rideshare Regulations, Placing Charter Amendments On The Ballot

Columbus City Council last night approved new regulations governing app-based ride sharing services. The regulations include new insurance requirements and background checks and registrations for drivers who work for companies like Uber and Lyft. Officials say the regulations are the first of their kind in the city for the services, and are designed to improve safety. The services link people who need a ride with motorists who work for the companies using their own vehicles. The two companies have been operating despite lawsuits filed by the city seeking to shut them down. Council also approved placing three measures that change the city charter before the voters in November. The changes include tougher ballot access rules for referendum or initiative backers wanting their issues placed before the voters.
