Newly-released Ohio Department of Education records show data experts were puzzled by some requests from an ex-charter school director whose decision to omit certain failing grades from sponsor evaluations led to his resignation in July. Data managers warned former School Choice Director David Hansen he would need to change state law in order to make the adjustments he requested. They also noted he lacked the necessary clearances to share certain data runs outside the department. Hansen, whose wife works for Ohio Governor John Kasich's presidential campaign, resigned after acknowledging he excluded failing grades so they wouldn't "mask" successes elsewhere. The altered evaluations were retracted. State Schools Superintendent Richard Ross says he supports tough accountability for charter schools and is disappointed flawed sponsor evaluations were issued under his watch. Ross tells the Associated press he didn't know all the details involved in Hansen's project. He says the department is putting safeguards in place to prevent similar problems in future.
