ALA Again Gives Franklin County's Air Quality A Failing Grade

For the third consecutive year, Franklin County's air quality gets a failing grade. The American Lung Association's "State of the Air 2016" report gives the county an "F"  for unhealthy levels of smog. Association spokesperson Lyndsay Moseley Alexander says all of Ohio's urban counties received failing marks in the report, based on the number of air quality alerts issued and other factors. But she says this report shows improvements in local air quality.

Alexander says poor air quality is harmful to thousands of vulnerable Franklin County residents.

Global climate change is complicating the matter. Smog is formed when the sun cooks pollution in the air from vehicle and plant emissions. Alexander says some efforts to reduce power plant and vehicle emissions are working, but more needs to be done. She points to the Obama Administration's attempt to reduce pollution through the Clean Power Plan, which is opposed by various industrial interests.
