The City of Columbus has won a 50 million dollar grant to integrate innovative transportation technologies, including self-driving cars and smart sensors. Alongside the U.S. Department of Transportation's 40 million dollar commitment, Seattle-based Vulcan Incorporated will contribute 10 million. Democratic U-S Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio says winning the Smart Cities Challenge grant means more than just funding for Columbus.
Brown also spoke about what Columbus residents can expect.
The department developed the challenge as a response to a report issued last year calling the nation's aging infrastructure ill-equipped to deal with a dramatically growing population. Columbus beat out six other cities including Denver, Kansas City and Portland. Federal officials are expected to make an official announcement in Columbus on Thursday.
