Boxing promoter and Ohio native Don King is stirring up controversy.
King, who is black, used the N-word when introducing Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump before his speech yesterday at the Midwest Vision and Values Pastors Leadership Conference in Cleveland Heights. The campaign stop was part of Trump's effort to court African-American voters. Talking about the need for African-American success, King recalled a conversation he once had with Michael Jackson about being poor.
Trump thanked King when he took the stage.
Mark Urycki of of member station WCPN in Cleveland has more on Trump's appearance.
Trump said his prayer is for an America of “unity, togetherness, peace and love.” Trump also promised to bring back companies and jobs that have gone overseas.
10 TRUMP “and it’s not even going to be hard.” :04
He acknowledged that the Black community has suffered discrimination saying many wrongs must still be made right. He said the Democrats have failed to help inner cities
13 TRUMP “Can’t get any worse. Perhaps they can but not much. And I will fix it. What do you have to lose? I will fix it.” :07
Outside the Cleveland Heights church, the city’s mayor Cheryl Stephens, a Black Democrat, said life is better. She now owns a house where deed restrictions once would have kept her and others out.
15 STEPHENS “African Americans, Jewish Americans, Irish-Americans and many otger could not rent her, could not buy here . They didn’t want us to go in the store and purchase anything. I stand as an example of how far we’ve come.” :15
Stephens called on Trump to apologize for leading what she called a “racist“ birther movement against President Obama.
