Arbitrator Says Columbus Cop Who Made Racially-Charged Comments Should Be Rehired

An arbitrator has ordered the Columbus Division of Police to re-hire the white sergeant accused of using racial slurs and threatening to kill two black officers. 51-year-old Eric Moore was fired for unrelated offenses. The arbitrator upheld a grievance filed by the police union. An internal investigation did not sustain the racial allegations made in 2014, but the Ohio Civil Rights Commission said the police chief ignored the complaints. Moore will receive compensation for back pay and benefits. The Ohio Attorney General’s Office recused itself from the case because Police Chief Kim Jacobs is a member of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission.
