Fresh Mark Faces OSHA Fines For Unsafe Conditions

The Fresh Mark meat packing plants in northeast Ohio that were the target of immigration raids last week are being hit with big fines from an earlier safety investigation.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited Fresh Mark for violating safe machine guarding protocols in three incidents, including one that led to a workers death in December 2017.  Investigators say the company failed to install proper machine guards, or provide proper training for workers cleaning the machines.  The company faces proposed penalties totaling over $211,000 - among the largest issued by OSHA this year.  Fresh Mark has requested a meeting with OSHA to discuss the fines. Last week U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials arrested nearly 150 undocumented immigrants in raids at Fresh Mark's Canton, Massilon and Salem facilties.  ICE said the raids were the result of a year long investigation into allegations that the company knowingly hired undocumented workers.
