Ginther Declines To Sign Legislation Studying Creation Of Municipal ID System

Columbus Mayor Andy Ginther has failed to sign legislation approved by City Council in July to fund a feasibility study into a municipal ID program.

Ginther's signature isn't needed for the study to proceed but his decision was unexpected. Ginther's office says council failed to consult the administration before voting on the legislation. A spokesperson says the issue has been studied in the past and another study won't provide the benefits advocates seek.  Two Franklin University faculty members  have been chosen to conduct the study An estimated 50 to 70-thousand Columbus residents do not have access to state issued IDs.  The study was requested by the interfaith group BREAD and a group  called One ID Columbus.
