Mt. Carmel MD Accused Of Intentionally Causing Overdose Death

A lawsuit filed Monday alleges a doctor, nurse and pharmacist at Mount Carmel West gave excessive and fatal doses of the powerful opioid fentanyl to over 20 patients over a five year period.

The suit was filed by the estate of 79-year old Janet Kavanaugh, who died in December, 2017 after being given the drug by Dr. William Husel.  According to the suit, Mount Carmel recently contacted Kavanaugh's family to tell them about the excessive dosage, and to tell them the staff involved had been suspended.  A statement released by Mt. Carmel says Kavanaugh's death was "not an isolated incident" and that Husel had ordered excesssive pain medication for 27 patients who were near death.  The hospitals says that while the patients' families "requested that all life-saving measures be stopped",  the dosages of fentanyl prescribed by Huesel were ecessive.  Two other people were named in the lawsuit, nurse Tyler Rudman and pharmacist Talon Schroyer, and Mount Carmel says 20 people have been removed for their involvement in the incidents.
