UPS Employees File Suit Over Alleged Racial Discrimination At Maumee Facility

toledoblade.com

Nineteen workers at the UPS hub in Maumee have filed a lawsuit against the shipping company, saying they're victims of racial discrimination.

The suit claims management enabled and encouraged a racist culture through salary, promotion and disciplinary decisions.  The workers also say they've been subjected to nooses hanging in the building and racist graffiti in bathrooms. UPS says it fired two employees and has required additional training and monitoring. In 2017, the Ohio Civil Rights Commission found evidence to support 25 complaints the firm engaged in illegal discriminatory practices at the Maumee hub during the previous year. The commission's report said the UPS hub has been "permeated" with racially charged comments and incidents since 2013 to include displays of Confederate flags, racially offensive text messages and "overtly hostile comments." UPS asked the commission to have a neutral employee from the agency review evidence in the case.
