Governor Mike DeWine kept his promise to sign the controversial abortion ban that has been known as the "Heartbeat Bill” into law. Ohio Public Radio's Jo Ingles reports.
DeWine has signed the House and Senate passed legislation that bans abortion at the point a fetal heartbeat can be detected.
“The essential function of government is to protect the most vulnerable among us, those who do not have a voice. Government’s role should be to protect life from the beginning to the end, to protect those who cannot protect themselves.”
Former Governor John Kasich had vetoed similar legislation twice. Opponents of the new law have said they’ll take it to court. That’s what has happened in six other states that passed bills like this. And courts have put those on hold.
