A Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio study of the materials going into the county landfill shows more than three-quarters could be recycled or composted.
Food comprises the largest type of refuse at 15 percent. Other recyclables include cardboard, paper, plastic, wood and yard waste that comprise a combined 68 percent of the material entering the landfill. The study says residents and businesses should use established recycling pickup or other programs, which could divert an additional 41 percent of those materials. 50 percent of materials are being diverted.
