Columbus Council To Vote On Settlement Of Intimidation Lawsuit Against Police Division

Columbus City Council on Monday is scheduled to begin considering a 475 thousand dollar settlement of a racial intimidation lawsuit brought by a former police officer.

Karl Shaw, who is black, alleges Sergeant Eric Moore, who is white, used racial slurs and threatened to kill black officers.  Shaw's attorneys say the sergeant admitted to making threats but remains employed.  As part of the settlement, the city will agree to label future cases of discrimination as criminal conduct, which is a fireable offense. Moore was fired in 2016 for an unrelated offense, but an arbitrator re-instated him. The settlement is proposed to council by Mayor Andy Ginther's administration.
