A termination hearing for the Columbus police officer involved in the shooting death of an unarmed black man last week concluded this morning.
Officer Adam Coy was represented by members of the police union and was not present at the hearing before Public Safety Director Ned Pettus. City officials are promising a "prompt decision" on administrative charges and whether to terminate the 19-year veteran.
Coy and another officer responded to a non-emergency call in the early morning hours of December 22. Within a few seconds of encountering 47-year old Andre Hill standing in the garage of a home on Oberlin Avenue, Coy had pulled his service revolver and shot Hill several times.
Neither officer had their body cameras turned on, but an automatic "look back" feature preserves 60-seconds of video prior to activation, which shows Hill holding up his cellphone in his left hand.
Columbus Mayor Andy Ginther and Police Chief Tom Quinlan have called for Coy's termination, and City Council President Shannon Hardin and Council member Shala Favor have called for criminal charges. The decision to terminate Coy rests with Safety Director Pettus. Coy has a history of complaints about excessive use of force.
The state Bureau of Criminal Investigation is also looking into the shooting.
