At Tuesday's cornavirus briefing Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced some residents in five northern Ohio nursing homes will need to be vaccinated again, after some shots were spoiled through human error.
"This was a case where the vaccine... the temperature was not kept where it should have been. In layman's terms, in my terms. this happened yesterday."
Dewine says Walgreens, which was the provider for the five homes, immediate reached out to reschedule and provide more doses. State medical director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff says any breach in the vaccine protocol means the doses can't be considered reliable, but they don't pose a medical risk.
"This is really an issue about taking every step that we can to ensure that whenever a person gets a vaccine, they're getting a vaccine that will work. This is not an issue, though, of any harm being done."
Vanderhoff says that while the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are very good, they can be a challenge to handle. The five facilities are Ashtabula Towers and The Maples in Ashtabula County, Heather Hill Care Communities in Chardon, and Six Chimneys and Willow Park Convalescent Home in Cuyahoga County.
