Columbus school district officials have made their final contract offer to the teachers union.
Details have yet to be released. Teachers, whose contract expired at the beginning of the current school year, have been working "to the rule", meaning they are doing only what is required by the current contract. District eighth grader Denver Brown told school board members Tuesday night that's not enough.
Salaries and record keeping concerns have been the main sticking points, and the district is struggling to make do with less than anticipated state funding. Members of the Columbus Education Association are scheduled to vote on the board's offer next week. The board voted last night to extend the expired contract of non-teaching staff while they continue negotiations with that union. And the board voted to hire the firm Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates to conduct the search for a new superintendent to replace Dan Good, who is stepping down at the end of the year. The process could cost up to 50-thousand dollars.
