Under terms of a new two year contract agreement ratified by the Columbus Education Association last week and going before the school board tonight, Columbus City Schools teachers will get 2 percent pay raises in each year of the deal - their first base pay raises in several years. The union agreed to a pay freeze in 2011, although teachers have continued to get modified step increases based on their length of service. The contract calls for a cap on insurance cost increases, but continues to pay 90 percent of a health-insurance plan for teachers in the system prior to 2009. The deal eliminates the "gainsharing" program that gave teachers an annual bonus for meeting student academic performance goals. Gainsharing and another related performance program were called into question when it was revealed that some reported student progress was based on data rigging by principals and other district officials.
