Ohio Hospitals To Study Child Injuries Under Grant

The Ohio Children's Hospital Association is getting a 1 million dollar research grant from the state to study injuries that prompt concerns of possible child abuse.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine says the grant money comes from lawsuit settlement funds. Hospitals will use the dollars for a three-year project to study so-called sentinel injuries in babies up to six months.  He says providers sometimes miss such injuries, which include oral injuries and bruises. By studying the injuries, state and hospital officials hope to detect patterns to help prevent, diagnose, care and treat abused children. The grant will involve six children's hospitals - in Akron, Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland, Dayton and Toledo. Nationwide Children's Hospital will lead the effort. The study's goals include finding out the frequency of missed sentinel injuries.
