State Issues Guidelines For Prescribing Opiates

healthy.ohio.gov

Ohio Governor John Kasich and a coalition of state medical professionals have announced guidelines meant to reduce the prescribing of opiates for short-term pain. The guidelines recommend using alternatives to addictive meds when treating pain from injuries and surgery that generally lasts less than 12 weeks. If a doctor does prescribe opiates, the guidelines recommend a minimum amount and avoiding automatic refills. The guidelines are voluntary.
