Columbus City Schools are transforming the traditional school nurses office in 17 schools this fall. Under an agreement approved by the Columbus Board of Education Tuesday with Children's Hospital in Columbus, four high schools and two middle schools will have in-school clinics staffed by a nurse practitioner provided by Children's. The hospital is also providing any medical equipment needed. The clinics will provide prescription medicine and vaccinations, and can handle typical childhood illnesses like asthma, ear infections and strep throat. A mobile unit will provide services for an additional eleven elementary schools. The clinics are expected to be up and running by November in East, South, Columbus Scioto and Marion-Franklin High Schools, as well as Columbus Girls Prep and Buckeye Middle Schools. Superintendent Dan Good says the cost to the district will be minimal, and the program could be expanded to more schools next year.
