Espinal Says Local Leaders Not Doing Enough To Help Her Case

This week marks one year since Edith Espinal took sanctuary in the Columbus Mennonite Church.

Tuesday she and her supporters marked the anniversary by continuing to call for changes in federal immigration laws. Espinal told reporters she has been visited by Democratic Congresswoman Joyce Beatty and other politicians, but they have taken no action.

Espinal also criticized Columbus City Council members for not acting, despite moving to declare Columbus a 'sanctuary city.' She says some council members told her they need six more weeks to pass a resolution to help. The Mexican native moved to Columbus in 1995, returned to her home country briefly, and came back in 2000 to escape gang violence.

Jim has been with WCBE since 1996. Before that he worked as a reporter at another Columbus radio station, and for three newspapers in Southwest Florida.
