Espinal Fined By Homeland Security

newrepublic.com

A Columbus resident who has taken sanctuary at a local church has been fined nearly 500 thousand dollars by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The department says undocumented immigrant Edith Espinal failed or refused to leave the U.S. by its deadline. Espinal has been in a Clintonville church since October 2017 and says she is unable to pay the fine. She was brought to the U.S. by her father more than 25 years ago. She is hoping Ohio politicians will intervene.

Jim has been with WCBE since 1996. Before that he worked as a reporter at another Columbus radio station, and for three newspapers in Southwest Florida.
