ICE Detainee In Youngstown Dies

www.ice.gov

A detainee in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at a Youngstown prison has died. ICE officials say staff members found 34-year-old David Hernandez Colula unresponsive in his cell early Thursday morning.

He died later at a hospital. In a statement, ICE lists the preliminary cause of death as self-inflicted strangulation, but the case remains under investigation.

Colula has been in the custody of ICE since December 6, 2019 following his arrest in Michigan and was eventually transferred to the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center, which has been housing ICE detainees.

Earlier this month, ICE announced plans to end that practice at the Youngstown prison February 29.

ICE says it's committed to the health and welfare of those in custody
