Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and the state education department Thursday outlined the five steps public schools need to take in order to hold in-person classes.
District officials must constantly assess students for symptoms of COVID-19, enforce frequent hand washing, sanitize shared surfaces, practice social distancing and create a policy on wearing masks. The governor says students beyond the third grade are urged to wear face coverings. DeWine says he was influenced by a report for the American Acadmy of Pediatrics, which believes the dangers of not opening schools outweighs the dangers kids face in a congrgate setting. Because of increased costs DeWine says he will try to find more federal CARES Act dollar for education. In early May DeWine stripped 300 million dollars for K-12 education out of the state budget when revenues were significantly lower than expected.
