Kasich Signs Traffic Camera Restrictions

Ohio's governor has signed a bill to require a police officer's presence for tickets to be issued from traffic cameras. The legislation would regulate the statewide use of the devices, though opponents say it's tantamount to a ban.

John Kasich'ssignature came Friday, a day after a divided Ohio Supreme Court again upheld use of traffic camera enforcement by the state's municipalities, reversing a lower court after a year of legal setbacks for camera advocates. Traffic cameras surged in use but have faced increasing pushback, including challenges to their constitutionality and criticism they're nothing more than moneymakers for cities. Voters in Cleveland and one of its suburbs were the latest to ban them in November. The bill's sponsor said this week he thinks it will withstand legal challenge
