Ohio State University has agreed to pay nearly $41 million into a fund for the sexual abuse victims of a now deceased team doctor.
Private investigators hired by Ohio State determined that Richard Strauss abused at least 177 students the 1980's and 90's, and that the school failed to act on numerous complaints. At least 360 plaintiffs have filed a combined 23 lawsuits.
The settlement between the school and 162 victims in 12 lawsuits was reached two months ago, but details were released today.
According to a release from Ohio State $40.9 million will be distributed by a three-person panel to individuals "based on the harm and damages experienced by each survivor". There are still 11 lawsuits against Ohio State that are not resolved.
Strauss retired from the school in 1998. He committed suicide in 2005. Public allegations began to build in 2018.
